Welcome to the IET Festival Competition page! 

Our mission is to create an educational experience where participants can polish and develop their skills during the competition. Unlike other events, we encourage competitors to seek feedback, coaching, and private instruction on their pieces, ensuring personal growth throughout the process.

The competition finals are unique: they will be held as an open concert during the festival. Additionally, all participants will receive written commentary on their performances in both rounds.

Competition Divisions

 Solo Euphonium/Tuba Artist Division
  • Open to all interested players except full-time professional performers or college-level teachers.

Solo Euphonium/Tuba Student Division
  • Open to students 19 and younger as of June 30 of the current festival year.
  • Must be enrolled in high school or a similar non-college/university program during the festival year.

Adult Amateur Solo Division
  • Open to players over 28 years old who are not professional performers or college/university teachers.

​ Chamber Music Competition (NEW!)
  • Ensembles of 3-6 members, with at least two members playing tuba or euphonium.
  • No professional ensembles or members may compete.​

Fees MUST be paid BEFORE the first round of the competition. Failure to do so will result in immediate disqualification.

General Rules

  1. All competitors must be registered for the Full Week of Festival Access to the IET Festival. (Competition takes place over the course of the entire week in several phases. See Timeline)
  2. There is a $45 application fee for solo divisions and $80 total per chamber ensemble. Payment is required before the start of the competition. 
  3. You may compete in multiple divisions so long as you meet all eligibility requirements. 
  4. Previous winners of the Student Division, may only compete in the Artist Division.
  5. Previous winners of the Adult Amateur Division may only compete in the Artist Division the year following their prize. After that year, they may take part in the Adult Amateur Division again.
* Failure to follow these guidelines and complete registration and payment may result in disqualification. Fees will not be reimbursed *

Adult Amateur Solo Division
  • Free choice of a work 4-7 minutes in length (penalties for works that are too short or too long).
  • The piece can be original or a transcription, published or manuscript. (Try to pick a piece that highlights your skills and is reasonable for staff pianists)
Preliminary: Without piano
Final Round: With piano (notify us of your piece choice by June 1st).

Chamber Music Division
  • Ensemble size: 3-6 members, no conductor.
  • Minimum of two euphonium/tuba players. All players must perform on all pieces during the competition. 
  • ​There are no age restrictions, but professional ensembles (or ensembles with one or more professional members) may not enter. All members must be registered for the full week of the festival. 
  • Choosing pieces that display contrasting styles and tempi is encouraged. 
Preliminary: Not more than 10 minutes of music, including:
  • One arrangement of a Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, or Romantic work (partial or complete).
  • One original work composed for the ensemble's instrumentation.
​Final Round: Not more than 12 minutes of music, including:
  • Two contrasting works (one must be original for the instrumentation). One work from the preliminary round may be repeated.

Judges and Feedback

  • Judges will include Guest Artists and Staff from the IET Festival, along with other professional musicians.
  • Feedback: Competitors will be assigned a random performance order and will receive written commentary after both rounds.
Competitors are encouraged to participate in lessons and master classes with IET Festival Guest Artists during the festival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to be registered for the entire festival to participate in the competition?
A: Yes, all competitors must register for the Full Week  of  Festival Access.

Q: Can I play my competition pieces in my lessons or master classes at IET?
A: Yes, competitors are encouraged to work on their competition repertoire during lessons and master classes.

​Q: Will I be able to have lessons with the judges during my week at IET?
A: Yes, our goal is education and our judges are able to meet with competitors. 

Q: Do I need to form my chamber group before the festival?
A: No, you can form your chamber group during the festival and prepare together. There are plenty of eager musicians ready to form a winning team! 

Q: Can I use my lesson time for chamber coaching?
A: Yes, chamber coaching is highly recommended, though please note that not all teachers may have space for chamber groups.

​Q: Should I prepare more pieces for IET besides my competition piece?
A: ABSOLUTELY! Use the festival as a resource to work on your personal goals. You may bring as many pieces as you'd like to develop and learn good habits on. (Note: You may not play pieces not assigned on the repertoire list for your competition division)

​Q: When do I need to finalize my choice of competition piece?
A: You must notify us of your choice by June 1st if your division allows a free selection of pieces (Adult Amateur and Chamber only)
